A deficit is no problem for these Spartans, as St. Mary’s boys hockey team scored a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory against Brookline at the Walter Brown Arena.
In the Wednesday evening showdown, goalie Brady Baldassare snagged his first win – and a whole lot of pucks – in net, while Nick Thornton delivered the game-winning goal for St. Mary’s, which now stands at 8-4 on the season.
The Spartans visit Pope Francis this Saturday at 2 p.m.
BOYS HOCKEY
St. John’s Prep 6
St. John’s High 1
It began with a snipe from Caleb White in the opening period, and it was all St. John’s Prep from there. The Eagles celebrated six times en route to a 6-1 thrashing of St. John’s High.
Brendan Powers and Johnny Tighe added to the scoring to put Prep ahead, 3-0. The opposition scored a much-needed goal, but the Eagles responded with three more in the third period to put a lid on St. John’s High. Those goals came from Powers, White, and Tighe.
Medford 13
Lynn 2
The Lynn Jets flew into trouble against Medford at Connery Rink, falling 13-2 against an explosive Medford side.
Nicholas DeNino made 42 saves between the pipes, while Tyler Witten and Andres Lopez potted the goals. Jacoby Comeau dished out an assist.
GIRLS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 7
Bishop Fenwick 0
Continuing her dominant freshman season, Bella Freitas was exactly that in St. Mary’s 7-0 explosion against rival Bishop Fenwick at home.
Freitas secured her hat trick – it’s not the first time she’s done so this season, harkening back to St. Mary’s last game against Fenwick. Alyssa Norden added two more goals for safe measure.
The Lady Spartans upped their record to 9-1-1 and are currently ranked No. 3 in the MIAA Division 1 power rankings.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Cardinal Spellman 86
St. Mary’s 82
St. Mary’s swam hard, but, ultimately, fell against Cardinal Spellman in enemy territory. Isabella Morillo (first place in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly) had a pair of wins, while Travis Smith, Sheila Pimental, Luis Velasquez, and Giada Caruso scored second- and third-place finishes.
