Nearly two decades after The Social Network turned Facebook’s founding into a modern myth, its follow-up arrives in theaters this weekend. The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin — the original film’s screenwriter, now in his fourth outing as a director — opens across North America as the headline release of the October 9 weekend.

The film stars Jeremy Strong, the Emmy-winning actor who previously worked with Sorkin on Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7, alongside Mikey Madison, the Oscar winner whose last film was the acclaimed Anora. Strong’s co-star Jeremy Allen White also features, fresh off leading a Bruce Springsteen biopic that opened to $8.8 million last October.

Expectations at the box office are deliberately modest. Long-range tracking put the domestic opening between $6 million and $10 million, and preview screenings on Thursday brought in about $650,000 — consistent with an adult-targeted drama in a market that rarely rewards them on opening weekend. Analysts compare it with talky, true-story October releases that built their grosses over weeks rather than days.

The tougher competition may be the incumbent, not the newcomers. The adaptation Verity holds the top spot at the North American box office after a $62.1 million global debut, and a Jessica Chastain horror film is drawing the younger crowd. For Sorkin’s reckoning, the verdict will come from staying power — and from how loudly the film’s argument about social media echoes beyond opening weekend.
