The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed about 400 points on Friday, gathering steam into the close as energy shares hit new highs and major indexes headed for weekly gains despite a volatile week. Traders balanced spiking oil against fresh doubts about how quickly artificial-intelligence spending turns into profit.

Energy names led the advance. Tanker and shipping stocks climbed to highs as crude prices jumped on renewed attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, while volatility in bond markets kept investors cautious. The 30-year Treasury yield recently touched its highest level since 2002, and the 10-year has traded above 5.3 percent — levels that tighten financial conditions whether or not the Federal Reserve moves.

The crosscurrents showed up across sectors. Airlines fell after Delta cut its profit forecast on fuel costs, software and cybersecurity shares recovered as fears that AI would replace established vendors eased, and telecom stocks sank on SpaceX’s spectrum ambitions. Streaming price hikes and AI spending plans added to the sense of an market repricing several industries at once.

For the week, the message from markets is less about direction than about sensitivity: oil, yields and AI profits are each capable of moving the whole board. Next up for investors are the October inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s meeting at month’s end, where futures markets have been pricing a meaningful chance of another rate increase.
