Pennsylvania health officials have issued an urgent warning to doctors about congenital measles, a condition not seen in the state for decades, as the nation’s measles outbreak reaches into its most vulnerable population.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health alerted physicians on October 21 about an increase in measles cases during pregnancy and rising concern about congenital measles, infection in a newborn contracted from the mother. It was identified “for the first time in decades,” according to The Hill via KFF Health News.

Congenital measles occurs when a pregnant woman contracts the virus and passes it to her baby. The consequences can be severe, including premature birth, low birth weight and serious illness in the newborn.

The outbreak behind the warning

Pennsylvania has reported 1,286 measles cases this year, the state’s biggest outbreak in decades, with five confirmed deaths. The sheer scale means the virus is reaching populations that were previously protected by herd immunity.

The warning is a sign of how far the outbreak has penetrated. When a disease eliminated in 2000 starts appearing in newborns, the public health failure is systemic, not individual.

What doctors are being told

Physicians are urged to maintain a high index of suspicion, isolate suspected cases immediately, and ensure pregnant patients’ vaccination status is documented. Our autumn vaccination coverage tracked the seasonal push, and KFF Health News has the congenital cases as its grimmest backdrop.

A disease of the past is writing new chapters.
