Five days remain until Election Day, and the final week checklist for voters is now a matter of deadlines, not intentions. Tuesday, November 3, is Election Day for the 2026 midterms. Early voting is under way in many states, mail ballots have been sent in large numbers, and the difference between a counted vote and a wasted effort is increasingly a matter of knowing your state’s rules and following them exactly.

The national picture shows why the checklist matters. As of October 29, 38,899,002 ballots have been cast across 47 reporting states, with 19,091,360 mail ballots returned and 19,807,642 votes cast in person. Another 29,545,133 mail ballots have been sent or requested and not yet returned. Those unreturned ballots are the largest single group of voters still to act, and many of them will need to be returned by mail, drop box or election office before a state specific deadline, not merely postmarked by Election Day. The early vote tracker compiles those state figures, but the rule that governs your ballot is your state’s rule, and it should be checked directly with your state or county election office.

Four checks before you vote

First, confirm your registration and your polling place or early voting location, because both can change between elections. Second, if you vote by mail, check the return deadline and the signature and witness requirements, and use a drop box or election office if mail time is short. Third, if you vote early in person, check the hours and the final day of early voting in your state, because early voting closes at different times in different states. Fourth, if you vote on Election Day, plan for lines and bring any identification your state requires.

Ballot measures deserve the same care as candidate races. There are 58 ballot measures on Tuesday across 24 states, on topics including life, voter identification, election integrity, taxes and sports participation rules, among others. Wording on ballot measures can be dense or misleading, and state by state guides from nonpartisan sources can help voters understand what a yes or no vote actually does. The time to read a measure is before you reach the booth, not inside it.

The final push, honestly described

Campaigns will spend the final five days urging turnout, and that urgency is justified: a large share of the electorate has already voted, and the remaining voters will decide close races. But urgency should not become pressure to vote without checking the rules. A ballot cast correctly and counted is worth more than a ballot cast quickly and rejected for a technical error. Check your deadline, return your ballot correctly, and vote in the way your state allows. That is the whole checklist, and it is enough.
