The United States will not launch new attacks on Iran before the November midterm elections, the president said Thursday, adding that Washington and Tehran are engaged in what he described as productive discussions. The comments appeared to lower, at least for now, the risk of a renewed round of major combat operations in a war that has rattled energy markets for months.

Even so, officials cautioned that military planning has not stopped. According to reports, American commanders are still preparing options to restart large-scale operations if talks break down, a reminder that the public pause and the private posture are not the same thing. The president also claimed oil was moving through the Strait of Hormuz in record volumes, though tanker traffic through the chokepoint remains closely watched by traders.

The rhetoric from Tehran pushed the other way. A senior Iranian parliamentary figure mocked American economic vulnerabilities online, pointing to fuel prices, bond yields and housing costs, after American officials had highlighted Iran’s own economic troubles. The exchange underlined how much of the confrontation is now being fought through markets and messaging as well as missiles.

For Gulf states and shipping companies, the coming weeks bring an uneasy calculation: whether the pause holds through the American election season, and whether diplomacy can produce something more durable than a lull. This is a developing story and will be updated as officials provide further detail.
